Registration is now open for our mushroom identification classes!
Each class will start with an open ID session for all members from 5:30-6:30PM in Bellingham (location revealed upon registration), so keep the dates in mind to bring in your specimens!
Classes fill up quickly, so we encourage you to register early! We may be experiencing a later-than-usual mushroom season this year, but fingers crossed for fall rains by October!
About the classes
Two 3-week sessions will be offered. We are starting the season in October with a class for club members who wish to deepen their identification skills. We’ll follow this class with an Introduction to Mushrooms in November after our Mushroom Show.
Dust off your Mushroom Identification Skills
October 5/October 12/ October 19
This class will focus on refreshing and deepening identification skills through hands-on learning and reviewing topics that will help hone our foraging skills. We’ll meet for three consecutive Mondays October 5 through October 21 at 6:30-8:30PM in Bellingham (location revealed upon registration). There will be an optional foray on Saturday, October 24 to collect for the Wild Mushroom Show. Classes are taught by our resident mushroom experts.
Introduction to Mushroom Identification
October 26/November 2/November 9
We’ll also offer a beginner’s class after the Wild Mushroom Show for those who want to keep things a bit simpler or are new to mushrooms. This class will focus on the procedures and resources used in mushroom collection and identification, emphasizing hands-on identification with keys and other resources. We’ll meet for three consecutive Mondays starting October 26 through November 9 at 6:30-8:30PM in Bellingham (location revealed upon registration). We’ll hold a few spots for new members signing up at the Mushroom Show.
Participants and all members are encouraged to collect and identify mushrooms away from class and bring in their finds (identified or not) ahead of each class. With mushroom experts on hand to help, we’ll all do our best to identify each specimen using keys and resources available.
All class participants will receive a copy of Kit Scates’ picture key and mushroom glossary and copies of beginner’s keys. Students are encouraged to purchase one of the recommended regional guides to mushrooms that will be discussed during the first class of each session.
Class cost
Pricing for each 3-week session is on a sliding scale from $25 to $45. The rate covers rental of the space and copying of resources provided to students.
How to sign up and pay
You may register for either session, or both. Classes will be limited to 30 students for the first session and 40 students for the second session, with 10 spots reserved for new members signing up at the Wild Mushroom Show. As necessary, a waiting list will be maintained for each session.
Finally, the class is only open to members in good standing. Make sure your dues are paid up for fall –– membership renews each year in September. Please see the NMA website membership page to renew or join.
Thanks all, and we look forward to seeing you there!
