Mission Statement
Northwest Mushroomers Association (NMA) encourages and develops the understanding of mycology, providing for the collection of data and the dissemination of information to the scientific community and the general public. NMA also promotes an educated approach towards the collection and consumption of edible mushrooms. We serve mushroom enthusiasts in northwest Washington State: Whatcom, Skagit, and parts of Island Counties.
Club History & Bylaws
It all began in 1989 in Bellingham, Washington, with a small group of people who wanted to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of fungi with the people in our little area of Washington and British Columbia. Northwest Mushroomers Association (NMA) is the result of that dream and many years of dedication.
Since its inception, NMA has concentrated on education—through forays, guest speakers, identification classes, and annual mushroom shows.
Much has changed since 1989, and NMA has changed with the times. Heavy books and newsletters kept us informed in 1989. Now we keep abreast of all things fungal with identification apps, such as iNaturalist, and through postings on our Facebook, Instagram, and website.
Mushroom identification remains a primary focus of our organization, but our membership is a diverse group. The NMA Google Group is a primary tool for members to discuss not only identification, but also a variety of other topics, such as cultivation, cooking, crafts, the use of fungi for health, remediation, and the impact of climate change on mushrooms—just to name just a few.
As a nonprofit organization, NMA is governed by the following bylaws:
