The NMA Microgrant Program supports club members in pursuing original, hands-on mycological projects that advance our mission. Whether you are sequencing DNA, developing educational materials, or running a community foray, this grant provides the resources to help you succeed.
Recipients can receive financial support for supplies, fees, and more.
Eligibility
Any club member in good standing is welcome to apply at any time of year. Projects must have a clear mycological focus (cultivation, ecology, identification, education, or related areas). Applicants must commit to completing the project.
What Grantees Receive
Awarded members will receive the following support:
- Up to $500 in funding for project supplies and materials
- Access to microscopes and laboratory space (subject to availability and scheduling)
- Promotion of your project in club communications and social channels
Application Components
A complete application consists of the following sections, and should be emailed to . Applications are evaluated by the Board at a monthly Board meeting, and applicants will be notified of their funding status within 4 weeks of their application being submitted.
- Project Description. Describe your project in plain language. What do you want to do? What are your goals? What do you hope to learn, demonstrate, or produce?
- Scientific Background. Explain the mycology behind your project. This may include the species involved, relevant ecological or biological concepts, your intended methodology, or prior research that informs your approach.
- Budget Request. Provide an itemized list of the supplies, equipment, fees, etc. you are requesting funding for, up to a maximum of $500. If you would also like access to club microscopes or lab space, note this here as well.
- Project Plan & Timeline. Outline your key milestones across the project window — a simple table or list of phases is sufficient. Your plan should demonstrate that the scope is achievable within the timeframe.
